It was a new dawn for the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) as the new Johannesburg Metro Region elected their first Top Seven on 16 and 17 March 2018. Sixty-one delegates representing 15 AMCU branches descended on the Sunnyside Park Hotel in Parktown, Johannesburg, for the region’s inaugural elective congress.

The Johannesburg Metro branches amassed 3 178 members and join the West Rand, Sedibeng, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Metro as the 17th region under the Gauteng umbrella.

In his keynote address to the delegates, AMCU National Treasurer, Jimmy Gama, urged delegates to elect leaders who will lighten the plight of workers. ”Comrades, this is a big opportunity for you as the region to make sure that when you elect you look upon yourselves, amongst all of you present here, and you choose people who will be able to take this baton and run, and be able to win the race.”

The Top Seven

Comrade Andrew Madikane emerged victorious as the chairperson. His leadership team includes Deputy Chairperson Sbusiso Kose; Regional Secretary Tladi Mokwena and his deputy Johnson Riba; Treasurer Lindiwe Singimba; Chairperson of Health and Safety Sandile Buthelezi and Chairperson of Education, Douglas Ndagani. The region’s Top Seven was nominated and elected uncontested.

Speaking to the new leadership, AMCU General Secretary Jeff Mphahlele reminded them that they were elected to serve workers. “You have demonstrated publicly that you want to tackle the problems or challenges of this region. So, these people are going to sleep at night and say at least we’ve got delegates who we elected, now they’ll run with the region. You have been elected into higher places; all the people – particularly your companies – did not know you for some time, but now they will know you. They will always want to meet with you and have a cup of tea with you, etc., it’s endless. But, remember that you did not put yourself there.”

In his first address as the chairperson, Madikane said “I feel very humbled and honoured to be standing before you and addressing you in this gathering. On behalf of my team, I’d like to thank the comrades for especially believing and trusting us that we will carry the baton and run with it. Thank you for bestowing your trust in us”. He added, “I’d like to reassure and reaffirm that we will cooperate with the national office, the west Rand Region and the branches at large.”
