AMCU members at Sibanye Stillwater reject offer

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) members at Sibanye Stillwater operations at Driefontein, Carletonville held a mass meeting on xxx to discuss the offer tabled by the employer in the on-going gold wage negotiations.
Sibanye Stillwater offered workers a total of R1 950 over a three-year period for the duration of the wage agreement. The money would be split over the three years with R625 for year one, R650 for year two and R675 for the third year.

Furthermore, Sibanye offered a R100 increase for year one on the living out allowance which is currently on R2 100 with no increase over the subsequent two years. As an added incentive, the company promised workers a once-off bonus of R2 000 to be paid in December 2018, should workers decide to accept the offer.

Both offers were unanimously rejected by the united AMCU members who emphatically demanded an increase of R1 500 for year one, R1 700 for year two and R2 000 for the third year. AMCU Sibanye members also demanded an increase of R300 for their living out allowance in response to increasing living costs.

AMCU Regional Chairperson Luyanda Maphinda said the mass meeting was conducted to get a mandate from the members to take back to National management who will then go back to the employer for further engagements.
“This meeting was for the members. They have spoken, and we have listened. The members have set the mandate and as regional management we will compile a report that highlights the demands of the workers to take to national management who will continue engagements with the employer,” said Maphinda.
“AMCU will not rest until the demands of the workers for a basic wage of R12 500 in the Gold Sector are heard and met,” he added.

AMCU have continued negotiating with AngloGold Ashante while they’ve declared disputes with Sibanye Stillwater, Harmony and Village Main Reef. Branch meetings for all AMCU members at AngloGold Ashante and Sibanye operations will be held to inform members of the offers made by the employers.
