AMCU embark on protected industrial action at Sibanye Stillwater

21 November 2018

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has given Sibanye-Stillwater a 48-hour-notice of the protected strike action that will take place across all Sibanye-Stillwater Gold operations. This comes after a resolution that was agreed upon by AMCU members at a Central Mass Meeting that took place at Masizakhele Stadium on Sunday, 18 November, to call a strike at Sibanye-Stillwater. The meeting was to give feedback to members on the progress of the Gold Wage Negotiations.

The Sibanye-Stillwater operations that will be affected by the strike include, Driefontein, Kloof, Beatrix, Health Services, Property Services, South African Region and Corporate Office, Sibanye Protection Services Ltd, Sibanye Gold Academy (Pty), Sibanye Shared Services, Cooke 1, 2 and 3 (Rand Uranium) and Burnstone. The strike will commence on Wednesday, 21 November 2018 starting with the night shift as well as all other shifts thereafter. All AMCU members working at Sibanye-Stillwater across all its gold operations as mentioned above will participate in this protected strike action, with the last shift reporting on Wednesday, 21 November 2018 for morning and afternoon shifts.

The strike action comes after the wage negotiations that began on 11 July 2018. Workers are demanding a R1,000 increase per year while the companies are offering R650 for the first year, R700 for second year and R825 for the third year.

AMCU will also be striking for other conditions of employment.

“Today you (members) are giving us a mandate to give Sibanye-Stillwater 48 hours before we go on strike. You are not going to lose anything by going on strike because you have nothing. South Africa’s natural resources are for us Africans. This exploitation must come to an end. Let us show the capitalist that we can unite as Africans. The strike will commence on 21 November 2018. We have nothing more to say to Sibanye-Stillwater. If they wish to meet with us with a view of resolving the dispute, we shall make ourselves available during the notice period,” said President Mathunjwa.
