27 October 2025
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) is deeply saddened to learn of yet another tragic fatal incident at Harmony Gold’s Mponeng Mine in Carletonville.
It has come to our attention that on 26 October 2025, at approximately 09:50, an electrician was electrocuted while conducting maintenance work at 120 Level, West Haulage 38 Crosscut.
This devastating incident has brought the total number of fatalities in the South African Mining Industry (SAMI) to 38 for the year to date, according to reports from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR).
AMCU extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased mineworker. We share in their pain and grief during this difficult time.
This latest accident marks the 12th fatality at Harmony operations this year, a tragic reflection of what AMCU President Joseph Mathunjwa has described as “the arrogance and self-serving leadership of Harmony, which refuses to accept constructive criticism aimed at improving safety and saving lives.”
AMCU remains resolute and will not be intimidated or deterred in its fight for zero harm in the workplace. As President Mathunjwa has stated, “We are outraged by this needless death and by Harmony ‘s disregard for worker safety”
We call on Harmony Gold to take immediate and concrete steps to address safety shortcomings and to engage meaningfully with unions and workers to prevent further loss of life. Mining should not be a death sentence. Every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of their shift.
“We will continue to demand accountability until every employer values human life above profit,” Mathunjwa concluded.
