The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has received a report of the death of another mineworker at Palabora Mining Company.
Based on limited information at this stage, we are told an electrician was electrocuted yesterday whilst performing his duties at around 15:00 on the 12 June 2025.
“Our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of employee who lost his life,” said AMCU Deputy President Phuthuma Manyathi.
This brings the number of Fatalities to 28 in the South African Mining Industry in 2025 compared to 18 fatalities reported in the same period last year.
Fatalities are rising but we don’t see the Mineral Council of South Africa rolling campaigns which will continuously remind employees about the inherent hazards of the jobs that they are doing. Safety campaigns offer numerous benefits, including reduced accidents and injuries, enhanced productivity, compliance with regulations, and a stronger safety culture. They educate employees about workplace hazards and promote safe practices, empowering them to make safer choices and potentially preventing incidents
Our structures will fully participate in this accident investigation to identify the causes and underlying causes of the accident.
