AMCU Cares aims to raise awareness on health and social matters. One of their objectives is to equip AMCU members with knowledge regarding chronic illnesses and social ills. AMCU Cares seeks to break the stigma associated with chronic illnesses, such as HIV/AIDS and TB. AMCU Cares aims to emphasise the importance of keeping physically and mentally healthy.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), hypertension (‘high blood’ or high blood pressure) is a serious medical condition that significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and blindness.
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day.
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of and show support for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.
In March 2020 the first wave of the global COVID-19 pandemic hit South Africa with full force. AMCU considered it a duty to assist union members to understand the dangers of the virus, and learn how best to avoid contracting it through basic hygiene practices and mask-wearing.
